Talking of a standard croquet lawn, when you are planning to mow it, cut to around ¼ inches to 3/8 inches. This will depend on the conditions. You will have to make sure that the grass has more chances of survival in the cold and dry conditions and this can be done when you leave the grass longer when there is a drought like situation and when the season starts. A croquet lawn will need to be mowed almost two to three times in a week but will require cutting daily. You should know that if the lawn is mowed low and on frequent intervals, weeds do not grow on it.
To avoid thatch from building up, the clippings are collected from the lawn in the beginning and the end of the season. You have to mow the land carefully so that the grass dos not get weakened. This can be done if you cut the grass not more than 1/3rd of its total growing height. If the temperature is below 5° C, the grass will have a slow growth. If you have a flat lawn, it is advisable to have a wide mower so that less time is needed and you do not have to walk much to cut the lawn. The typical size of the mower that is used is 24 inches or 60 cm.
If your organic lawn is not flat, it will be good for you to take a narrow mower so that it can work well even on the curvatures. There are some mowers that are very wide and this makes them heavy as well. The time taken to mow the land will depend on the size of the lawn and your mower.
